New Canon’s on the way
Canon announces 5d Mark II, 50D, and G10
Monday, September 22, 2008
It’s been about a year since Canon released the 40D and the G9. Both cameras were well received for their particular use. Since then things have heated up quite a bit, especially in the DSLR space with Nikons release of 3 new cameras, all targeted squarely at Canon’s top 3 models.
I don’t know much about Nikon, and I’m still puzzled why a 12mp full frame DSLR is so exciting. I can’t imagine the 12mp Nikon delivering much more image quality than a current 5d. Nothing against Nikon, I’m sure they are good cameras, but lets face it, other than ridiculously high ISO (which can be useful on occasion), there is nothing new ... Canon’s been there done that ... a long time ago.
I’m not sure if Nikon had anything to do with Canon’s continued evolvement and new cameras. I suppose it could have, but it’s not like Canon hasn’t been on a steady progression for a long time. The successor to the 5D was just a matter of time, and we’ve gone from 20d to 30d, 40d and now 50d in just a few years.
The specs for these cameras are all over the internet, so no point in repeating them. I’m excited to buy a 5d Mark II as my carry around/backup body. It appears the image quality will be on par with my 1Ds Mark III, which is very good. Hard to believe you may get the highest image quality DSLR for under $2,700.
As far as the G10, I’ll be very curious. I’ve been following closely the evolvement of the reduced size 4/3 cameras which promise to bring DSLR image quality to a point and shoot. The new G10 brings several new things to the table, including a new improved lens that is a little wider, but less telephoto, and a new almost 15mp sensor. Unless they’ve really done some amazing things with noise reduction, I’m not sure the G10 will be an improvement. I’ll probably wait and see what the 4/3 cameras offer over the next year or so before upgrading.
Who knows though ... maybe I can score some pre-release versions from my rep to play around with.
More to come ...
