Apple releases new Mac Lineup

Thursday, March 5, 2009

On Tuesday, Apple updated almost the entire Mac lineup - new iMacs, new Mac Mini’s, new MacPro’s, and even a slight speed bump to the recent 15” MacBook Pro.

The new MacPro’s are enticing with Intel’s latest  Nehalem Quad core Processors, featuring improved memory management and faster RAM access.   The king of the bunch has 2 of these babies running at 2.93gHz, but it is the highest priced MacPro in some time ... $5899.  If you only want 2.26gHz the price drops to $3299, but I’m not sure if this machine will be much of a boost over the current 3.0gHz quad cores.  I’m still sitting on the fence  ... should I upgrade or shouldn’t I?  Some additional features can really push this machines performance, such as the hardware RAID card which can control the internal drives.  If Photoshop for the Mac was 64 bit it would be a no brainer.  Since I’m using Lightroom so much now and it is 64 bit, I may still do it.

The new Mac Mini is encouraging ... rumors were Apple was thinking of killing the Mac Mini off, and that would be sad.  Hook this new one it up to the 24” LCD display and you have a pretty sweet combination.

Anyway, if your like Macs there’s lots to check out.
