Canon 7D and Epson 3880

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

This really isn’t a “news” site, so I don’t put a lot of the new release info up here.  But since these are both from companies I use extensively I thought it worth mentioning.

The new Canon 7d is targeted to compete with Nikon in the midrange prosumer dSLR space ... APS-C sensor size cameras. Many felt the 50d wasn’t really much of a step up, but the 7d is a complete camera redesign, and boasts some impressive improvements, such as a new 19 point autofocus system, newly redesigned body with bright 100% viewfinder, a new 18mp sensor.  Sounds like a pretty sweet camera for the money, coming in about a month.  There are reports all over the internet by now, so plenty of info to be had.

In a “it’s about time already” announcement, Epson finally upgraded perhaps the best inkjet printer for the money on the market, and moved the venerable 3800 printer into the x880 realm.  This includes the vivid magenta inkset and newly designed heads.  I’m sure those that just purchased a 3800 in the last month or two aren’t very happy right now.  All I can say is there isn’t much a company can do, and we all knew this was coming.  Not any consolation, but one thing I might point out is that 3800 is a stellar printer with almost zero clogging problems.  The new 3880, while improved, may not have much impact on your output unless you have high quality files in a 16bit/ProPhoto  working space, so enjoy the 3800 ... it’s still a terrific printer.

I’ll probably get a chance to tryout the new 7d, and I’ll definitely get a 3880.  More to come.
