My new Mac Pro

So I’ve had my new Mac Pro a little over a month. It’s running flawlessly … here’s a little write up about it so far.

A little test using a Leica Elmar 24mm on my Sony a7r …

A Moment Frozen in Time …. or not.

A Moment Frozen in Time .... or not.

Is there a point where manipulation in post processing so too far? I struggle with this sometimes, but I also think sometimes you can’t show your vision with a single “frozen moment”

Drum roll … my #1 image from 2013

Drum roll ... my #1 image from 2013

So here it is … by personal favorite image of last year.

Top 10 of 2013 … number 2.

Top 10 of 2013 ... number 2.

Almost finished for another year, here is number 2 in my annual countdown. In a few days my favorite shot from 2013.

Top 10 of 2013 … and 3rd place is ..

Top 10 of 2013 ... and 3rd place is ..

“Winter at Mesa Arch” PhaseOne DF with IQ180 back Phase/Schneider LS 55mm, 0.4 seconds at f/16, iso 35 Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park near Moab, Utah is certainly one of the most iconic locations a landscape photographer can shoot.  While arches in general are great to photograph, this arch is unique in that it […]

2013 Top Ten Countdown … #4

2013 Top Ten Countdown ... #4

If you have been following my work you’ve noticed that every year at least of couple of my top 10 is a seascape, normally with a sunset. This one is a little different…

Sony a7r … Houston, we have a problem!

Sony a7r ... Houston, we have a problem!

Does the shutter in the new Sony a7r cause vibrations? Many talking about it and it’s pretty obvious there is an issue …

Number 5 of 2013

Number 5 of 2013

“Under the Maple” PhaseOneDF/IQ180 Back with 28mm 1.3 seconds at f/14, iso 35 Portland Japanese Gardens This small tree at the Portland Japanese  Gardens has become an iconic location over the past decade, with almost every notable photographer trying their version of it.  Normally shot in the fall with brilliant red leaves on the tree […]

Number 6 in the 2013 countdown

Number 6 in the 2013 countdown

“Evening Blues” Nikon d800e, Nikon 14-24mm at 24mm, 4 seconds at f/11, ISO 50 Abstracts are something I don’t do very often.  I see others doing them,  some look pretty cool, others not so much.  I guess I’ve always felt that part of photography is the realism it offers.  Just my opinion and I certainly […]

Best of 2013, number 7

Best of 2013, number 7

“False Kiva” Arca Swiss rm3di, PhaseOne IQ180 back, Rodenstock 40mm HR 1/30th sec at f/22, iso 35, 5 shot stitch I have seen many images of this place and I’ve never seen one which didn’t inspire some quiet reflection regarding the history and somewhat sacred feeling one gets from this view.  I’ve always wanted to check […]

Best of 2013, #8

(Click an image to see a nicer and larger presentation) “Hills of Green” Arca Swiss rm3di with PhaseOne IQ180 back, Rodenstock 40mm HR ⅛th sec at f/11, iso 35, 14 shot stitch This year I attended a workshop in Yosemite taught by Rodney Lough. I’ve admired his work for many years, not only is his […]

Best of 2013 … #9

Best of 2013 ... #9

“Queen’s Bath” Arca Swiss rm3di, PhaseOne IQ180 back, Rodenstock 40mm HR lens ½ second at f/22, is0 35, 2 shot stitch #9 in my top 10 is an image I really love, but it almost didn’t make the cut. Maybe I’m too critical of my own work, but there are many technical things about the […]

Another year gone … time for best of 2013

Another year gone ... time for best of 2013

“Aspens in Fall” Phase One DF with IQ180 back Phase/Schneider 55mmLS, 0.6 Secs at f/8, iso 35 This series each year is sort of the old “good news, bad news” prospect.  Good in that I enjoy it, bad in that it means I’m another year older. This year was a little tougher in that respect […]

Online images – 500px, 1x, and Pixoto

Most photographers like to post their work online, and at some point in time, many begin looking for something better than “Flickr”.  Pinterest has received a lot of attention, but the problem with Pinterest is they are about everything, and photography is just a small part of what they offer.  It’s hard to not get […]

Neutral whites … video

I had a few people ask me about more detail in some of my neutral white technques from my last blog post, so I thought I would dust off the video skills and do a new screencast for fun. There’s some other ideas here as well, such as using an extra layer and modifying it […]

Neutral “whites”

Neutral "whites"

There really isn’t “white” in most photographs.  Areas of white are actually areas of gray, the value based on how much light they receive.  These gray tones should usually be pretty close to neutral, but often they have a color bias. Sometimes the bias is too strong and it needs toned down, or even […]

Green River Overlook

Green River Overlook

Green River Overlook PhaseOne DF with IQ180 back, Mamiya 45mm lens, 3 seconds at f/22, ISO 35 I’m in Moab for a few days to attend a workshop with one of my mentors, Andy Biggs.  I’ve always admired  his work … it’s fantastic.  Not only is he a fabulous photographer, but his knowledge in post […]

“Toward the Light” … new version

"Toward the Light" ... new version

Recently I’ve been working on clearing out my entire library.  My goal was to find just the images I think  have potential, and get rid of the rest.   Using a color code system as well as star ratings, I went through my files and eliminated thousands of images. Now I have a “workable” number […]

My best/favorite image from 2012 … “Scripps Pier Window”

My best/favorite image from 2012 ... "Scripps Pier Window"

As I mentioned in my last post, the reason I chose this as my number one image instead of Antelope Canyon Skylight was based more on an emotional attachment.  I really like both of them, and I can find good points as well as faults with both, but not enough faults to decide one […]

#2 of 2012 … Antelope Canyon Skylight

#2 of 2012 ... Antelope Canyon Skylight

I had a hard time deciding which image was my number 1 vs 2 image for the year.  I really like both of them, and I couldn’t come up with any good reasons to pick one over the other. Ultimately the decision was pretty arbitrary, based on something not related to the quality of the […]

#3 of 2012 … Moonrise over Totem Pole

#3 of 2012 ... Moonrise over Totem Pole

I’m getting near the end of my top 10 list from last year and at this point putting them in order has gotten quite challenging.  Of all the images I’ve taken from the last year, the last 3 are definitely my favorite … maybe they represent my “best of the best”?  Anyway,   choosing the […]

#4 … Black Beach

#4 ... Black Beach

So back to my top 10 of 2012 countdown. On my recent trip to Maui I decided to stay in Hana for a couple of nights.  The drive to Hana is interesting, but doing the round trip thing is really not much fun.  To get to any location there by sunrise would mean driving out […]

Balboa Pier

Balboa Pier

I thought I would take a break from my top 10 countdown (for all 3 of you that follow my blog) with a few images from tonight.  I’m in Newport Beach for a little golf and relaxation, so I headed down to Balboa Pier for the sunset tonight.  This is the first time I’ve […]
